MOTO MARKET NYC : Fall 2019 : Gallery

Moto Market NYC -- Kirsten Midura and Shelley Golan -- returned to its roots Sunday, almost one year to the day the community fair first hit the Brooklyn borough. Setting up at the Moto Spirits distillery in Bushwick again, this time for round four, Moto Market featured 15 vendors, including the Motofellas, Johnnypuetz Production, Moto Armata, Lucifer's Pride, Bananna Bones, Upjet, NNR, Kynsho, the Empire State Motorcycle Safety Program, and Vandalay Leatherworks ... to name a few.
And despite the rain, a healthy share of the NYC moto community came out for the day, which featured a particularly potent -- and welcome -- hot chocolate whiskey variation, courtesy of hosts Moto Spirits. Check out some images from the day ... we concentrated on the people this time round.

Darren McKeag: Keeping Old School Artistry Alive

Paintings that celebrate the chopper lifestyle, intricate tattoos encapsulating biker iconography, and linework which embraces everything from helmets to entire motorcycles … tanks, fenders, fairings; All could be considered old-school skills that have lost steam in the modern world … were it not for artists such as Darren McKeag.
The 52-year-old travels the country, and the world, from his Cedar Rapids home to share his talents, drawing inspiration from the biker scene, and in turn fanning the proverbial flames for a traditional artform at everywhere from Sturgis, to SEMA and David Mann’s annual Chopperfest artshow.
“My influences as a child, were David Mann centerfolds,” says McKeag, a regular at Brooklyn’s annual Indian Larry Grease Monkey Block Party. “I never met David, but his art has been a part of my entire life … and still gives me inspiration ... I really enjoy his early work.”

Motovlogging in NYC: Licensed to Ill

He's got a moto license to ill ... Beastie Boys references aside, the Brooklyn, NYC-based motovlogger 'The illestrator' — "getting into shits and giggles for shits and giggles" — has built a sizable following over the past few years on his now 55.7K subscriber YouTube channel, which features a combination of general moto topics for riders — some Brooklyn and New York-related, some review-based materials, and even some build snippets, all laced with a healthy dose of humor. The recent Brooklyn College graduate (poli-science major) and motorcycle enthusiast took a moment from his busy schedule to talk with NYC Motorcyclist about his ever-expanding project, its origins, what motivates his pieces, and what the future holds.

Season 2 Motos and Photos NYC Opener Sold Out

WE'RE BACK!!!! Motos and Photos NYC kicks off it's second season Dec. 5 at Kickstarter HQ in Greenpoint with a trio of local talents: photographer Mark Squitieri, comic book artist and illustrator Lydia Roberts, and motovlogger The illestrator taking the stage.
Tickets (limited to 70) are now SOLD OUT. But we have started a waitlist in case anyone can't make it on event night. Joining us will be Moto Spirits with whiskey tastings ... and there will be pizza.
As in the past, we're also requesting photo submissions for the event. December's theme is: “Your favorite riding moment from this season.” Simply hashtag your images on Instagram with #motosandphotosnyc and our panel of judges will select the top 5 to be shown Dec. 5. You may even be called up to talk about your photo. Deadline for submissions is Dec. 3 at noon.
We look forward to seeing all of you out again for what promises to be a memorable evening.

Mark Squitieri: Anthropomorphizing the Modern Motorcycle

Mark Squitieri is a published lifestyle, fashion and portrait photographer based out of New York City whose work includes a wealth of stunning moto product shots. The 50-year-old born-and-raised Long Islander started riding at the age of 20 and has never regretted that decision; his love for photography these days is now combined with a passion for motorcycles, a pairing that has opened up a new world of opportunity.
Squitieri, a Field Engineer for a Medical Imaging Company during the Monday-to-Friday work week, has been involved in photography in some form or other for more than two decades. But the last three years, in particular, have been his greatest in terms of growth, skill and professionalism, with his main goal always being to capture emotion and beauty in his images.
We sat down with Squitieri recently to discuss his work, the industry, the importance of continued growth as a creative, and what it’s like to shoot from a crowded Ural sidecar during the city’s Distinguished Gentleman’s ride … it’s not easy.

VKTRE Moto Company Pops Up in NYC

It's a chance to check out the company's collection, meet the brains behind the brand, and take advantage of a 15-per-cent discount on some very stylish jackets. We sat down with Duarte recently to catch up on what's new with VKTRE.

Lydia Robotica: Capturing Moto Enthusiasm in Art

Comic book illustration, motorcycles and Brooklyn: a trifecta Lydia Robotica – or Lydia Roberts as she is known in this mortal coil – has blazed her path through over the past five years. With work that draws on sci-fi, horror / fantasy and moto themes, the 31-year-old School of Visual Arts graduate (BFA Cartooning and Illustration) says at the most basic level she just hopes to inspire people in the same way artists and people in general have inspired her.
We are honored to share with you a recent interview with Roberts, where she talks about her work (illustration, painting, design and hand lettering), her passion for motorcycles – on road and off road, and how her life’s journey has influenced her as an artist.
